Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy and Post-Partum

I am honored to have my dear friend and chiropractor in San Diego on the blog today. She is sharing how chiropractic care can keep your body functioning at its optimal level throughout the journey of motherhood-from preconception, to pregnancy and beyond!

Dr. Deborah is the owner and founder of Rooted Life Family Chiropractic. Her passion is to educate each and every person on the body's natural ability to heal itself because she knows that the body's natural state is Healthy! After studying Human Nutrition at The Ohio State University, She moved across the country to attend Palmer College of Chiropractic West

How can chiropractic care help throughout the transition to motherhood?

From conception through pregnancy to postpartum, chiropractic care helps to ensure the nerves and joints of the spine are communicating freely and appropriately, without any interference! When a joint is not moving properly it creates inflammation and muscle tension. Over time, those occurrences create an inference in how the spinal nerves communicate with muscles, organs, tissues and cells of our body.

The nerves at the very top of the neck and the low back control hormone production. Ensuring these nerves are communicating with a clear pathway will help to regulate a woman’s cycle to prepare her for conception. We think about our nutrition, strength and power, but what about the nervous system?! Without our nervous system we wouldn’t be able to digest and utilize those nutrients, move our body, or develop muscle strength.

Pregnancy offers so much joy and excitement, but quite a bit of stress and strain on the body! The growing belly and breast tissue alter weight distribution and can lead to strain on the neck, mid-back and low back. Those nerves at the low back are going to innervate the uterus and other reproductive organs. Proper movement and alignment at this part of the spine ensures there is proper communication between the brain and those organs so that the process of labor and delivery can occur smoothly and efficiently.

And lastly, Estrogen levels during pregnancy are up to 100 times higher than what they typically are during your cycle. After giving birth, estrogen levels decrease dramatically (especially within the first 24 hours!). Knowing how our system operates under typical circumstances, imagine how our body responds to that estrogen drop while also recovering from birth, breastfeeding and having a newborn? These hormone changes, paired with the wonderful experiences of birth, can really put stress on a woman’s body.

What is Chiropractic?

The purpose of chiropractic care is not the treatment of conditions or disease; rather, it is the restoration of normal body function. As chiropractors, we work with the nervous system via gentle spinal adjustments. We reduce stress related interference to the nervous system, thereby enhancing overall body function. All the systems of the body — circulatory, digestive, eliminatory, hormonal, glandular, immunological, muscular, reproductive, respiratory, and skeletal — are controlled and coordinated by our central nervous system.

Prenatal Chiropractic

Can you go to a chiropractor while pregnant? Yes! In fact, it is recommended. Studies show that regular chiropractic care during pregnancy:

-reduces labor times by 25-31%

-reduces pain during pregnancy

-helps the baby assume a healthy position in-utero

The Webster Technique is a specific method of evaluating and correcting a mother's pelvis to restore proper movement and alignment so the baby can move freely and position themselves in the best position for birth.  When the mother’s pelvis is out of alignment, the ligaments that connect from the pelvis to the uterus increase their tension (tone) resulting in a distortion to the uterine space. When this happens it can become difficulty for the baby to move freely and comfortably within the pelvis.

This particular technique requires additional training. Check to make sure your chiropractor has this training and is Webster Certified.
